Here's what we have in store for our long-awaited Calan Mai weekend:

Location:

Brendan Byrne State Forest is our traditional 'home' where Red Oak Grove began all those years ago.  We'll be in the spacious Group Site A, with two thirty-foot long pavilions to stay dry and shady, our own cooking facilities, a nearby ritual area, and a modern, hot water shower-house nearby! Thank the Gods! But remember, is vital that everyone bring their own chair for around the fire; otherwise, you'll be sitting on the ground!

Community Bonding Ritual:

Like the Norse sumbel, but Welsh-style! The "Defod Cymuned" is Red Oak Grove's new community ritual where we celebrate the Kindred and each other by sharing our recent accomplishments, honoring the Gods or loved ones in our lives, and perhaps even making an oath over the sacred Community Cup! Bring your favorite beverage as we toast to each other, our Ancestors, the Nature Spirits, and the Shining Gods and Goddesses!

Workshops:

Patron Deities Workshop by Vela Chandra & Bard Dafydd
Don & An Dagda are..................

Brewmaster Competition
Do you (or a friend of yours) brew Mead, Beer or Ale? Enter it in our Brew Competition and maybe take home a prize! Please bring a minimum of 3 pints of each brew to be judged. Brews will be in several categories - and then Best of Show.

May Crown Weaving Workshop

This one is a REAL workshop, where we all get to create our own May Crowns! Weave branches together to fit your noggin, decorate with ribbons and flowers, and be a Well-Dressed Druid, ready to Dance the May Pole with the best of 'em!

If you have a Willow Tree near your home, please bring some thin branches - around 6 feet long. If you have some thin ribbons, small flowers - real or not - or any sparkly bits of stuff, please bring them.

Main Ritual:

Our May Day Ritual is one of the most anticipated of the year!  Spring has arrived, and we welcome the return of the warm weather in this joyful ritual!  Expect loud singing, dancing, and a traditional May Pole ceremony that's a little different than you'd expect.  You'll be part of the ceremony re-enacting the why and what of the May Pole, which you're sure to find very meaningful and incredibly fun!

Food:

We will provide all meals, including a Feast on Saturday evening.  Our Grove owns a fully-stocked Kitchen-Trailer and it's set up for everyone to use.  To cut down on waste and dish-washing, we request everyone to bring their own plate, bowl, cup & utensils, and wash your own stuff after meals.  Thank you!

Calan Mai Cupcake Contest:

Time to welcome in the spring with whimsical, colorful, flavorful cupcakes! Show us your most adorable, most delightful, most delectable petite pastries to compete for the prize and honor of being our resident Champion Cupcake Conjurer! To enter, you MUST pre-register for the weekend, and let us know that you wish to enter the contest.

If you want to contribute food:

Aside from our cooking competitions, please remember that we will be preparing enough food to feed everyone. So if you want to bring some food to share, please remember that we hate wasting food, and we have very limited space in our coolers, so if you do bring food, make sure you bring your own way to store it. Little things like non-perishable snacks and goodies and any kind of beverages to share in-between meals are always welcomed and enjoyed!

Music around the Fire:

It's one of our traditions to keep the energy going late into the evening with an awesome drum circle around a roaring fire!  But why stop there? If you've got another instrument you'd like to play, please bring it along! Time to get Bardic! Let's play, sing, dance, and maybe tell a story or two!

How we help our Nature-kin:

As part of ADF and Red Oak Grove's commitment to public service, a donation box will be available at our events, to be taken to the AWA for the benefit of all the animals being cared for there while they wait for someone to adopt them and take them to their forever homes. The AWA a private, non-profit, 501(c)3 animal welfare organization which operates the oldest and largest low-cost spay/neuter clinic, adoption center and no-kill animal shelter in South Jersey. They run various programs including adoptions, veterinary services, pet therapy, trap-neuter-return and humane education services. Your donations are greatly appreciated! Please see our Red Oak Grove Facebook page under the Files tab, or www.awanj.org for a full donation list.

Call For Workshops

Red Oak Grove would like to extend an invitation to all who are interested to apply to present a workshop at one of our Outdoor events this year! Aside from the joy of enriching the minds of your fellow pagans, workshop presenters also get FREE admission to the event they present at, as well as FREE admission for one guest! So if you're interested, please email officers@redoakgrove.org and we'll be glad to send you the form!
